If you enjoy cycling then get a road bike. Road bikes are the ones that you see on Tour de France and local road bike races. Spend atleast $ 2,000 because anything less would be a waste of money. You need to invest in your bicycle because it requires that much money to get a decent bike nowadays. Ofcourse you can get a bicycle that functions properly for much less. But I wouldnt spend any less for a bicycle because once you try a bicycle that is designed by engineers then you’d clearly see the difference between that and a $ 300 worthless trash they sell at Walmart.

For a $ 2,000 road bike you typically get Shimano Ultegra or SRAM Rival group set for an entire bike that weighs around 17lbs. For $ 300 you would get a bike that shifts with a loud clunk and weigh twice that much. $ 2,000 road bikes are engineered by dedicated professionals. You would be amazed how quickly, smoothly and quietly the bike can shift when it is made and tuned properly.

A typical roadie will ride atleast 20 miles per ride if not more. Some people go on 50 mile bike rides every day and these are enthusiasts and not athletes. Road cycling is fast and fun. Riding a bike should be an experience. The amount of money you are willing to spend on your bicycle will elevate your experience accordingly. If you ever rode a $ 5,000 road bike then you would know the difference between that and a $ 2,000 road bike. Some people might think it is ridiculous to spend that much money on a bike considering they can get a bike at walmart for $ 300. They clearly dont know anything if they think the $ 300 bike is the same as something that costs 20 times more.

If you are an athlete then you should get a road bike and dont get the entry level bike because that will leave much to be desired and spending $ 700 to upgrade later for a $ 1,400 bike and then to a $ 2,100 bike is a waste of money when you should have just bought a $ 2,100 bike to begin with. A decent bike starts at $ 2,000 in my opinion and anything less would end up having you spend more money in the long run because you would want that more expensive bike once you test ride one at your local bike shop and realize how much better it is compared to that $ 700 entry level road bike.

My recommendation for a road bike is Cervelo Soloist Team.

Visit your local bike shop and tell them what you are looking for. You need the correct fit to get the best fitness benefit.

Well, no bike is going to tone your upper body unless you do bench presses with it. Cycling works the legs, mostly quads, and the glutes. What kind you buy will make no difference, as better bikes are lighter for racing, but if you are just looking to build muscle, you can buy a heavier bike and accomplish the same goal.
Question
I do a lot of road biking. For the offseason I’m considering getting either the Lemond Revmaster Pro or the Cyclops 300PT. I can’t stand using a bike on a trainer so I prefer a stand along indoor bike. The Cyclops has power the Lemond does not. Any suggestions?
Answered by The omnipotent one
I know you said that you don’t like using a bike on a trainer but I would like to make a recommendation. If you are going to spend money on a stand alone exercise bike then you’re wasting your money. For half the money you could get a really nice indoor trainer and power computer. If you really want a cool experience try the kinetic rock and roll pro. It has a heavy flywheel and it rocks with the bike so you can simulate climbing.

look into the line of Trek bikes. they are good, reliable bikes and if you go hard tail, you can spend less than $ 1000 and get a great ride that will last for years.

for you, look at the 3700 through the 6500. all are under $ 1000.

Are you sure you want an actual mountain bike? Are you planning on riding down hills and rough trails, or just riding around your neighborhood for exercise? The reason I ask is that a real mountain bike is much harder to ride on streets than a road bike, since the tires have much higher rolling resistance. For example, I get tired riding my old Trek 820 circa 1993 after a mile, but can easily go 6-7 on my Trek 7.3 road/fitness/commuter bike. If you need a bike that can be comfortably ridden on both street and unpaved bike path, look into cyclocross models or hybrids with smaller tires. If you are sticking to paved streets, take a look at the bikes made by Specialized or Trek that have straight handlbars like a mountain bike, but have road tires and a nice light-weight frame.

Good luck!

Just ride, a lot. Twice a week for at least an hour each time would be good, should try to do one ride thats 2-3 hours. Just make sure your pushing as hard as you can without pushing so hard that you have to stop, if you just go on a leisurely ride through town, that won’t do a lot. And actually riding in mountains is better because then you have to push harder due to less oxygen in the air and all the hills:)

Biking is a great workout and fun, but its really easy, so to get a hard workout from it you have to go a lot longer. For example on flat terrain, a 20 mile bike ride is probably equivalent to a 4 mile jog. Think of it this way, biking is mostly working out only certain muscles in your legs, jogging works out a lot more muscles in your legs. So you might consider trying jogging a little bit too, maybe jog once per week and bike once per week, thats what I’m gonna start doing as soon as its nicer out.

Question
I want to get an exercise bike but I am not sure whether to get the Tunturi E80 or the Life fitness C1 upright cycle (advanced console). It is important for me to get something that is reliable.

Does anyone own either of these bikes and what are your experiences with it?

Would really appreciate advice. Thanks.xx

You see the Life Cycle in most gyms, it’s probably better.
