question structure sentence messed up is. clarify can you if please?
Question
I hear pro road bikes are basically made to be as light as possible, but not necessarily as comfortable on longer rides. Endurance road bikes are made more for comfort over a longer period? What else?

Here’s an example of an endurance bike I had i mind:

That particular bike is not really an endurance bike. In fact, it is pretty aggressive, and akin to a standard road bike.

An endurance bike, if I were designing it… would be light weight, have longer stays and wheel length, and a more projected rake in the fork. It would for all intensive purposes be a light weight touring bike. The longer stays and wheel length would provide comfort and dampening, as would the fork. You would give up some responsiveness in steering, but given the purpose.. that would be good. Materials would be a critical choice as well, one would probably mix the material to get a balance between performance (in the main frame) and dampening in the stays and fork.

You’re looking at a road bike with a slightly relaxed geometry. This gives you a riding position that’s a bit more upright than the full-out race bikes. That’s good for long rides, especially if you’re not quite as flexible as the racers are. It’s a nice bike, but consider the competitors as well — Giant Defy Advanced and Trek Pilot. Test ride all of them and pick the one that rides the best for you. Specifications on a web site are interesting but worthless. The fit and rid mean everything.

I’ve seen a number of “endurance bikes” on the market. Most seem to be road bikes with a flat bar instead of having the drops. These bikes are usually entry to mid-level with respect to weight and component selection. Everyone I know who bought one of these bikes moved up to a “real” road bike if they kept riding.

there is really no such thing as an “endurance bike ”
they just made that up

i mean there may be bikes called that but they are not likely to have much in common

it actually seems a lot like a professional racing bike to me

Question
Just wanted to know. I’m also entering track at my school in January, So I also need some tips for running long distances, as I make a better sprinter than anything else.
Answered by misha estrin
run the 100 3-8 times a day 4-5 days a week. don’t do it every day because then you will burn yourself out and never have time to recover (like it kind of seems you are doing now). drink lots of water before you run not to get cramps, then do a 3-5 minute jog as a warm up. after that stretch out. you should stretch out after the warm up and not before (remember this because stretching out before is almost useless) when you are done with your workout then do a cool down (same as the warm up) and stretch again not to be sore the next day. get a watch to time yourself and preferably do this at a nearby track at a high school. make sure your running shoes aren’t very old and worn out. a eat stuff with protein and after your workout drinking a glass of chocolate milk can help you muscles recover quicker then normal. imagine how you improve during one season and now think about what you can do in 3 stay committed good luckgood luck with running and i hope this helps

Riding an exercise bike will train your calves and quads. This could help sprinting and running up hill. It is not really a recognized form of athletics training though. As for long distance training, try alternating between slow long distance and fast shorter distance running to improve your aerobic and anaerobic capabilities.
Question
I can run marathons in 3 hours but I cant do hill repeats on my mountain bike. How can I improve? I have excellent cardio but my muscular endurance is VERY poor on a bike.

Strangely I can run the hill repeats with zero problem. Please help

Answered by ^_^ smiles
3 hours isn’t Olympic caliber but is still quite impressive. Good job (:

Anyways it’s a different movement so your legs aren’t conditioned to do biking, just keep at it and in a matter of time you’ll have the same endurance on a bike (:

Good luck

Answered by anthony
different muscles.

thats a great marathon time.. Whats your favorite marathon?

Answered by Jude the Obscure
3 hours! That’s impressive. My brother is the most fit 30 year old I know, and he just ran a marathon in 3:38. . . 3:15 qualifies you for the Boston Marathon… If you’re having a rough time with bicycling, just do it more often. 3 times a week, for an hour or two. The muscles are different, and going up hills on a bike requires stronger leg muscles, (specifically the quads) but if you’re in that good a shape, you should be fantastic on the bicycle, with some repetition.
Answered by John M
You use your muscles differently. It will take time to see some improvement.

Justify Your Answer. Thank You.

Yes.

If you are a runner, doing some cross training in another sport that also exercises the legs (but different mussles) will help

When I ran the NYC marathon, I ran 5 days a week and rode my bike one day per week and a used my nordic track ski machine on days where the weather did not allow me to work out outside. It helped a lot

The best way to improve your running endurance is to run. There is no easy way out. I can cycle for hours at a good pace but I can’t run worth a darn.
Answered by Dan
Yup. It’s aerobic exercise, which means that the more you do it, the better your endurance. Running would be a better way though, because then you’re using the same leg muscles, which will make those muscles stronger and more stable for running, whereas biking uses difference muscles.
Answered by Silverbullet
Absolutely it can improve your cardiovascular capacity, but muscle recruitment is somewhat different, so cycling can’t substitute 100% for running.

Long term, you may find running speed impacted somewhat because cycling develops some bulk muscle in your quads that isn’t directly applicable to distance running.

Short term, cycling can save your season if you can’t run due to injury.

  1. Mark S says:

Actually, for a beginner, the best type of exercise that you can do to improve your cycling, is to ride your bicycle. There are a lot of specialized exercise programs that olympic cyclists use to improve their cycling. But until you’re a fairly proficient cyclist, the best thing that you can do, is ride your bike.

  2. mtlbiker says:

Running and cycling both improve cardiovascular fitness, but they use some different muscles. I cycle regularly, I can easily do 100 km without strain, and feel fine the next day, but if I were to run 10 km, my legs would be sore for a week. I know this because I have done it
