About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Jen is a 34 year old clothing salesperson and the mother of three children ages 14,11 and 8. being in retail, her work hours vary from day to day. she works either from 8:00am to 4pm or from 12pm to 8pm. Jen is 5’5″ and weight 140 pounds. Much of her leisure time is spent with her children and their activities. She prepares an evening family meal when she is not working (they are Vegetarian) and plans a meal for her husband to prepare when she is working. Question
So I bought a cheap target mountain bike ($ 150) to ride around to work and for fitness in the great city of Philadelphia. Within in the 1st week I found it so much helpful and fell in love with riding as a mode of transportation and as a good workout. A week later the bike was stolen…damn master lock wasn’t the best choice for a U lock. I knew $ 20 was too cheap.

Now, I definitely feel the need to replace it. Maybe I’ll go with a serious lock…but I’m considering a real bike this time. Is the Iron Horse Maverick 3.0 decent? Will this hybrid handle the potholes and terrible philly roads as well as be good for the biking trails along the river? If not, what would you advise. Mind you with one bike already stolen and funds limited (I am a student), what would then be a better replacement? $ 250 and under, after all I found this for $ 250.
Thanks!

Answered by laurasza
i would go for it. it has decent componentry. it looks like it will handle pot holes fine and be a great bike for riding along the river. all in all i would defenetly get it for the good bike and price.
Answered by Tom
If you’re upgrading the bike, definitely get a better lock also. I generally try and get a lock worth about 10-15% of the cost of the bike. I also have my main bikes insured and register the locks with the company (as some offer a money back guarantee up to £15k if the locks are cut by thieves – although I’m sure there’s loads of get-out clauses for the company in question to end up not paying…)

Background:
currently 5ft 3.5″ 20 years old and 86kg. DESPERATE to lose weight for a wedding in a months time plus hoping that will help kick start my weight loss to be at a healthier weight for my height and age.

Master Cleanse:
I have done it before for about 5/6 days and lost I think 2/3 kg. But this time I’m planning to do it for ONE MONTH people have done it for much longer so please do not tell me not to do it unless you have done your research on it too, all comments welcome.

Excerise:
I have a exercise bike at home and i plan to to use that for 1 hour a day plus my fitness DVDs called “10 minutes solution pilates perfect body”(approx 55 mins long) and “pilates weight-loss workout for dummies” (approx 38 mins long). I plan to do all of these work outs in one day, i know it will be tough but i do not work during the week (just weekends) so i can do this mon-fri and on sat just maybe do an hour on the bike

what to you think?

Thank you in advance for you help!

Answered by Star Girl
Honey, no…

Master cleanses don’t work. They’re fasting diets. In other words…You just don’t eat. Obviously you’re going to lose weight. Heck, if you drink only water for the month before the wedding you’ll lose TONS of weight! Then, once you start eating again, you’ll gain it all back because your body will have gone into starvation mode (Because you’re starving it by eating little to no food!). You may even gain back more than you weighed before you started! That’s how the body tries to save itself. When you don’t eat much for a short amount of time (the cleanse)…the body thinks you’re starving. Your body will thus store everything you eat from that point on as fat so you have something to keep yourself going if you ever go into starvation mode (the cleanse). See how that works?

Losing more than 1 or 2 pounds a week (8 pounds in one month) is unhealthy. Your body cannot keep up. You’ll run into serious problems.

You shouldn’t be telling people not to help you if they haven’t done their research because clearly YOU haven’t!

I know you’re desperate to lose weight. It’s difficult being a much larger girl! However, starving yourself is not the answer. Doing these silly cleanses are NOT the answer. You’d have figured that out if you did the research. Look at Oprah. See how she gains and loses weight? It’s because she’s taken part in so many of these fad diets! They work wonderfully because they’re meant to starve you! The RIGHT diet to lose weight is not a diet at all. It’s a lifestyle change. Start eating healthy! Eating healthy does not mean eating less in all cases. It means switching french fries for carrots and broccoli and switching a burger for a sandwich! If you’re into fast food, it means switching from McDonald’s or Burger King to Subway or Quiznoes. That is a sure way to LOSE weight and keep the weight off. It’s NOT EASY! Losing weight isn’t easy. Gaining weight is easy…but losing it is not. You have to work at it. You have to choose your meals wisely. Make healthy choices. You deserve it. You don’t deserve to be unhappy with your body! You deserve to be proud and love your body! Everyone does.

Starving yourself and going on these crazy diets (only drinking lemonade/syrup mixture for a month, fasting for 3 days a week, only eating after 3 o’clock…etc) is easy. And, you will lose weight but only temporarily. If you want to keep the weight off, you’ll have to do these diets for the rest of your life. And, your life won’t be long because after a year or two of these diets you’ll be so weak and skinny that you’ll probably die! Pleasant huh? Not really…

Nobody at this wedding will care how much you weight. They invited you didn’t they? Clearly your weight doesn’t matter much to them! You see?

EXERCISING! Okay…So you’re planning on doing a lot of exercising. That’s fine. But, to do all of that you’re going to need LOTS and I mean LOTS of energy! You need protein and carbs. Lots of lean meats (yummy chicken!) for the protein and for the carbs, whole wheat goodies (whole wheat bread sandiches with deli meat, lettuce, cheese…etc and whole wheat pasta!). These are healthy choices. Foods you can eat for the rest of your life that will maintain your health and give you the energy to lose weight. The lemonade and whatever else you eat and drink with the cleanse will not provide you with the energy to do the exersizing. You’ll get through 10 minutes on the exercising bike and you’ll be pooped! As well, you should always have a rest between such heavy workouts. If you want to do these workouts in one day, then I suggest you have a break in between.
Monday-workout Tuesday-rest Wednesday-workout Thursday-rest Friday-workout saturday+sunday light workouts.

Do that, or do an hour long workout everyday with one day of rest on sunday. Spend 20 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes doing the 10 minutes solution… and 20 minutes doing the Pilate’s weight-loss workout…

I don’t know you…But, I do want to help you and I hope what I wrote did help you. (:

Feel free to contact me (happyradish@yahoo.ca) if you want any further information.

I should also note that these cleanses don’t ‘cleanse’ your body. Your body doesn’t need ‘cleansing.’ Your body was built to clean itself from the inside out. That’s what peeing and pooping and livers and kidneys are for.

As well, I’m not a professional. I’m not a doctor or anything like that. I’m very interested in healthy living, healthy eating, psychology and things of that nature. I’ve done plenty of research on these topics because i’d like to be a nutritionist. Please look into whatever I have said yourself. Do the research and find out more about what you’re doing to your body before you do it. Okay?

Have a nice day. Good luck.

I would love to hear how it went after your 30 day blitz. Since I do not know the calories you would consume as part of the master cleanse use this calculator to figure out the results. http://www.scientificpsychic.com/health/cron1.html

Good luck.
