Question
increments, say, she will pedal for 2 minutes and stop and then do it for another two minutes an hour later. If she does this 5 times a day, is she getting the same benefit as someone who stays on for a good 10 minutes at a stretch?
Answered by S.K.
In terms of calories burned, yes, the benefit is the same, but in terms of cardiovascular fitness, the benefits are less. The total work-out time of ten minutes is not really adequate for much in terms of either fitness or calorie burn.

As a fellow mom who also hates to exercise, at least with much intensity, can I suggest you suggest to your mom to try walking instead? Walking briskly for a half hour a day, or for an hour several times a week, is a lot less awful to me, enough that I can do it week in, week out.

Answered by Chichi
No she wont. Her body is heating up during the two minutes she does, but because she gets off and rests so quickly, your body will cool back down. Its not enough time to burn a significant amount of calories
Answered by CathyW
No, because she never exercises long enough to get her heart rate up. If she were trying to break an hour of exercise into 4 15 minute periods, this might work, but not for only 2 minutes. Instead, why don’t you and Mom go for a walk outdoors. You can walk and talk and she will love catching up with you. You’ll both be more fit and closer to each other as well.
Question
I usually workout on the Elypical since it seems to burn more calories in less time and has less impact on the knees. Can some give a summary of the benefits of each?
Elyptical, Treadmill, Stairmaster, Stationary bike

Thanks,
MW

Answered by mattsports22
elyptical- good because it burns calories fast and has little impact on your joints. it also involves your arms

treadmill- like running outside but the treadmill is slightly esier (sory 4 the spelling) on your knees

stair master- burns calories fast, low impact and can also build some lower body muscle

bike- no impact, can be very comfortable

Question

The stairmaster gets rid of love handles better than anything because it works that region the best. But, I wouldn’t do just one and not any of the others. The bike is also good for love handles and thighs, like the stairmaster, but it’s less strenuous because you’re not actually having to move all of your weight up an incline. So, the bike would be good for warm-ups and cool-downs to the stairmaster. The treadmill is good for more of an all-around workout. It gets everything the bike and treadmill get but with less emphasis on the thighs and love handles and it also gets a little upper-body done because of you moving your arms so much when you run. But too much treadmill will give you shin splints after a couple weeks or so. Be careful, shin splints hurt. I’ve had ‘em a couple of times. I would just jog around a track or somewhere safe in a neighborhood or something.
Answered by mfoley6
Treadmill. You can walk, run, or jog, and it works the most muscles.
Answered by becker-lisa@sbcglobal.net
all three will keep it fresh just do a different one every day.

good luck on your quest.

Answered by REDMEAT
The best one is to use a treadmill at 2 mph at full incline. Try it, it will burn alot of calories without the need of intense increase in your heart rate.
Question
I dont like the stairmaster or bikes at the gym, is the treadmill about the same workout wise.
Answered by latinatexas
I always use my treadmill and I recieve optimal performance while doing so. You may burn more cals on the stairmaster due to the elevations.
Answered by cc c
I’m an athlete and i say you should just run or work out without machinery. Instead of using StairMaster or bike. If you really want to use machine i wouldn’t use treadmill because it basically runs for you! >.<
Question
I have osteoarethritis in my knees. I know swimming is the best option for exercise, but I don’t know how to swim. Plus, I don’t have time to swim and wash my hair every time between school and work. Can I use exercise bikes instead of the stairmaster I usually did for exercise or will it injure my knees even more?
Answered by Disambiguation
I have osteoarethritis DDD DJD and on and on
with osteoarethritis it is best to push through the pain. It gets worse if you baby it. The joints its worse in with me are the ones I dont use much
Answered by mlgable
Yes you can use a bike. Be sure you are taking glucosamine though to help rebuild the lost cartiledge in you knees.
Answered by pobrecita
Biking is way better for you than the stair master. It is a low impact activity and might help you feel better. Swimming is great too. You can also rollerblade. Rollerblading is low impact as well. Walking would even be better than the stairmaster.
Answered by mistify
This would be a good alternative to swimming. Generally speaking, different types of exercise are on a continium of how much impact they induce. At the very low end of impact is swimming…at the highest end would be running. Bike riding is an activity that falls somewhere near swimming. However, be advised that some people who have very advanced OA cannot make a full revolution on a bicycle. It might take some stretching before you can go all the way around, or before you can take any resistance.

What about water aerobics? You do not necessarily need to know how to “swim,” but do need to be comfortable standing in at least waist deep water.

My own personal experience, none. Really. I fought with weight for years mixing those torture devices with weight training, and all I got was hungty. Then I heard about the idea that if you drop cardio and only do strength training, you build muscle mass and burn the fat all the time, not just while you are running. So I tried it for a couple of months, and I lost 35 pounds (and 6 inches in the waist), never felt hungry, and have more energy than in many years! I can run longer now than when I was on the treadmill every day.

So, drop all the cardio and use free weights as much as possible. Try it for 2 months and see if you have the same results.

And before you discount this as not being for women, my Wife has also tried it with good results.

If it doesn’t hurt while your doing it I’d say yes. Exercise is good for you, but you don’t want to hurt yourself. What about an elliptical machine. I know I spelled it wrong, its the one that looks like a tread mill but your moving your arms back and forth too, that’s suppose to be low impact. How about just walking?
