Question
I was told a Mongoose from Walmart or big chain stores are not the same as the ones at a bike shop. So I returned my big-chain Mongoose and went to a bike shop and got a Mongoose Otero Elite dual suspension bike for around $ 540 (used to be 850). Is this a good bike?

There is a huge difference between the Walmart Mongoose and the bike shop Mongoose bikes. The same thing goes with the Schwinn bikes. Doral Industries owns both companies plus Gt and Cannondale. They lowered the name brand status by selling cheap bikes to department stores. They still make the good ones.

If it’s from a real bike shop vs. the discount stores – it’s MUCH BETTER! If you go to the link below, you’ll see that Pacific-Cycle owns many bike companies. And even Pacific–Cycle was bought out by Dorel Industries.

Mongoose, like Schwinn, has two divisions. There’s still the real bike shop division (thank God) & the discount store division. I don’t know much about dual suspension bikes, but – again, if it came from a real bike shop, the quality will be much better. You did good.

I am looking for my first bike to ride with friends on long trips. Maybe one or two races. But most likely just around with friends on 10mile trips. I can get the trek for $ 1300 and the Specialized for $ 1400. I am not sure which bike to get. I know the trek is more relaxed and is a triple compared to a double but it seems to have better frame, brakes and rear derailer. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I personally would go for a more relaxed ride, but that’s me. I love my touring bike more than any other bike because it just eats the miles and is comfortable. It doesn’t hurt that it has a triple either.

The single most important thing about the bike is that it should fit YOU. If the bike doesn’t feel right when you ride it, don’t buy it. Both of these bikes are very nice, but try a few others and see which one rides best and makes you most comfortable. The greater the distance, the more important fit will be.

i myself would go with the 09 Specialized Allez Elite looks euro as well as looks like a good ride while still giving the needed push to keep up to those Thor Hushovd`s in your race. But i mean if you are going to put the time in get a nice bike which is both of these, if you are not going to do that many rides or races i wouldn’t really bother with a more high end bike.

I do around 62-124 mile rides and it’s only on a little devinchi 07 or 08 i believe and faires pretty well in the races i do as well as at the provincal (State Finals i guess you call them in the US) level too.

If you want to look good on a bike Specialized is the better one but im not sure about performance in the races.How many would you consider doing, what disciplin?

Even so, the frame doesn’t matter than much it’s the components.

First off that Dylan guy is an idiot! The frame makes a huge difference! A steel framed landshark is going to feel and react completely different than a full carbon trek madone or specialized tarmac. components are very important but you don’t want to buy a bike on components alone.

I would go with the Allez because it has a compact double (meaning smaller than normal chain rings) on the front. Compacts are great for new riders because you get more forgiving gears with out compromising shifting performance. the bike industry is trying to move away from triples as they shift poorly and add a significant amount of weight.

The Allez also has the full 105 component line while the trek is a combo of 105 and tiagra. Full 105 is better.

If you are looking for a more upright riding position, specialized makes a huge stem kit that can totally change the angle of the stem raising it or lowering it substantially. Changing the angle/position on the trek would be more difficult. Ask your local shop to see there Specialized Stem Kit (They should have one).

Every ounce of ethical and logical reasoning within me tells me this is a bad deal. I’d keep the xbox, personally.

BUT if your really not sure I’d look up the price of a typical mountain bike and compare it to the selling price of an xbox 360 elite on ebay. You should get a pretty clear idea of what your best option is. If your still not sure, take time to consider the pros and cons of the bike vs the xbox. Ask yourself, Will you use either of these things a lot? Which one will get more use? Which is worth a greater fraction of your time?

I am thinking about getting a Scott CR1 Elite. Can anyone tell me how it is bumpy roads? What colors it comes in. How they like it? Any details will help.

The CR1 is a very comfortable bike. It eats up a lot more vibrations than the lighter model the addict. However I personally find it a bit flexy on the climbs. I would say the CR1 is good for long distance races but not sprints or crits or climbing races because the added flex. The Addict would be better suited in those conditions, especially the climbs because it is also much lighter. I find the Giant TCR Advanced and Giant TCR advanced SL to be the best of both worlds. They have a very comfortable ride and are also very stiff.
Question
Are there any advantages in purchasing an ’08 Allez Elite versus an ’07 model? A local shop has both available with a significant discount for the ’07 model. I will be new to the sport and have decided this is the bike for me. I see very little differences in comparing specs, however, I have no idea what even these differences pose.

In addition, would you recommend any immediate upgrades to components. I will be a new rider, so I want an entry level bike, however, I am not averse to spending something additional if there will be a noticeable improvement in comfort or rideability.

Get the ’07. The shifter/derailleur groups are identical on the two bikes. The only major difference I can see is that the ’08 has just 2 chainrings (the middle chainring is deleted to save a little weight) whereas the ’07 has all three, and the wheels and tires are a bit different.

Bike shops usually try to move out old inventory as new model bikes come in. If you can get a new discount on last year’s model you should go for it. The differences are not really worth talking about.

First thing you ought to buy is a set of clipless pedals and cycling shoes. There is nothing that will do more for your riding than good pedals and riding shoes.

With regard to upgrades, you should know that the most economic route is to buy a bike with all the features you need and want. It is much more expensive to buy a bike and upgrade components at retail prices than to buy a bike with all the gear you want. This is because a bike manufacturer buys stuff at volume prices and can pass the discounts along.

The 07 model for sure. Full 105 groupset, mavic wheels, FSA cranks, plus it looks sooo much nicer than that horrible red 2008 thing. I have mates who have both – The 07 is nicer – The 08 model has Tiagra shifters. Considering the shifters are one of the most expensive components on the bike, it’d be best to get 105 over Tiagra.

Go for a double, I really don’t think you” need 3 chainrings. If you do ride a lot of hills, you’ll simply get stronger and won’t use it anyway.

The basic Allez is still for good for such a drop in price compared to the elite, see if you could get the 07 model of that. The only difference is the 105 groupset over Tiagra, which really won’t mean anything to someone just starting out TBH

    If it’s a hybrid street/mountain bike in fairly good condition and you really have got the urge to go biking, but can’t afford the price of a new one, then yes. Also, if you’re getting bored with games and/or you are out of shape and need a fun way to exercise, then yes also. It really depends on where you live too though. I’d love to have one to do some countryside biking.
